God's Covenant with us- Christ's Sacrifice on the cross.
Genesis 15:1-6
God gave an object lesson-
"Count the stars if you can-that will be the number of your seed. It says then that Abram believed and it was counted into him for righteousness.
Genesis 15:9-12
God told Abram to prepare for a covenant.
God told Abram to take a heifer of 3 years old, a she goat of 3 years old, a ram of 3 years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.
Abram divided all but the birds, which was a covenant that was a custom of the people where Abram lived.
A Covenant is between 2 (parties) people.
God caused a deep sleep to fall on Abram. So now there is a question. If God is going to make a covenant with Abram then where will the 2nd person come from?
Genesis 15:13-16
God's plan for Abram
Abrams seed would be in servitude for 400 years and come out with great substance. God would also judge that nation. You can read this in Exodus 12:41
Genesis 15:17-18
The Covenant
When the sun went down God passed between the pieces. This is where God showed me something that took my breathe away.
Notice the details-remember it takes 2 to make a covenant. Abram is asleep!
It's says a smoking furnace (Deut. 4:20; Ex. 19:18). God the Father
It then says And a burning lamp
(Jn 8:12; Jesus is the Light of the World
Jn 1:6-8; Jon the Baptist came to bear witness of the Light.
Rev. 1:12,13) The one in the midst of the candlestick.
God the Father and God the Son walked between the pieces. Jesus was Abram's substitute just like He is our substitute! Wow!
This is one of the word pictures I see.
Genesis 221:-5
God's test for Abraham
Abraham was to sacrifice his only son, the son of the promise, at the place God would show him.
In verse 5 Abraham showed his faith in the promise God made with him.
Isaac had a question
Abraham had the wood and the fire for the sacrifice but there was no lamb. Isaacs question was, "where is the lamb for a burnt offering?"
Abraham answered his son with confidence and wisdom of prophecy.
God will provide Himself a lamb.
God will BE the Lamb.
